T-strainers have a perpendicular screen chamber (T-shaped) that provides significantly more screen area than a Y-strainer of the same pipe size. This larger area means lower flow velocity through the screen, lower pressure drop, longer intervals between cleaning, and higher dirt-holding capacity.
AQ Process Systems sources and exports T-strainers in cast and fabricated construction for sizes from 2" to 48" and pressure classes from 150 to 600. Available with flanged, butt-weld, and wafer connections in carbon steel, stainless steel, and alloy materials.
T-strainers are preferred over Y-strainers in larger pipe sizes (6" and above), high-flow applications, and where longer cleaning intervals are desired. The perpendicular screen chamber also makes screen removal easier in tight installations.

T-strainers have a perpendicular screen chamber providing 3-5x more screen area than a Y-strainer of the same size. This means lower pressure drop, higher dirt-holding capacity, and longer cleaning intervals. Y-strainers are more compact and cost-effective for small sizes. T-strainers are preferred for large sizes (6"+), high flows, and where pressure drop is critical.
Use T-strainers when: the pipe size is 6" or larger (cost difference narrows while performance gain is significant), pressure drop must be minimised, high debris loads require longer cleaning intervals, or frequent screen access is needed (T-strainer covers are more accessible). Use Y-strainers for small bore, high-pressure, or compact installations.
Standard screens are stainless steel (SS 304 or 316) perforated plate or wire mesh. For corrosive service, Monel, Hastelloy, or titanium screens are available. Perforated screens are used for coarse straining (3mm+ openings), wire mesh for fine filtration (down to 0.044mm / 325 mesh). Duplex construction (perforated plate backing with fine mesh overlay) provides strength and fine filtration.
Yes. T-strainers work in both horizontal and vertical pipe orientations. In vertical installation, flow should be upward so debris settles away from the outlet. The screen chamber orientation is flexible, it can point sideways or downward depending on access requirements.
Yes. For pipe sizes above 24" (or where cast bodies are unavailable), we supply fabricated (welded) T-strainers manufactured from plate and pipe materials. These are custom-built to the required size, pressure class, and connection type. Material certification and radiographic examination of welds are provided.
