Plug Valves

Industrial plug valves for on/off and diverting service, lubricated, non-lubricated (sleeved), and eccentric designs for pipeline, process, and multiport flow applications.

Overview

Plug valves are quarter-turn valves using a tapered or cylindrical plug with a through-bore to control flow. Their simple, robust design makes them popular for pipeline and process applications where reliable, low-maintenance isolation is required, particularly in dirty, viscous, or abrasive service.

AQ Process Systems sources and exports lubricated plug valves (where sealant is injected to maintain the plug-to-body seal), non-lubricated sleeved plug valves (using a PTFE or elastomer sleeve), and eccentric plug valves (cam-action seating for tight shutoff). Multiport designs (3-way, 4-way, 5-way) are available for flow diverting applications.

Plug valves are particularly valued in pipeline service for their piggable full-bore design, bidirectional sealing, and top-entry maintenance. We supply to API 599, API 6D, and MSS SP-78 standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Plug Valves

What is the difference between lubricated and non-lubricated plug valves?

+

Lubricated plug valves inject sealant between the plug and body to maintain the seal and reduce operating torque, requiring periodic sealant injection. Non-lubricated (sleeved) plug valves use a PTFE or elastomer sleeve between plug and body, no sealant needed, making them suitable for clean, chemical, and food-grade service. Lubricated types are preferred for pipeline and high-pressure applications.

What are eccentric plug valves used for?

+

Eccentric plug valves use a cam-action half-plug that lifts completely off the seat during opening, providing zero seat rubbing and tight shutoff without the friction wear of concentric designs. They are widely used in wastewater, slurry, and utility applications where reliable shutoff with minimal maintenance is required.

Do you supply multiport plug valves?

+

Yes. We supply 3-way, 4-way, and 5-way plug valves for flow diverting, mixing, and stream-switching applications. A single multiport plug valve can replace multiple two-way valves and associated piping, simplifying the installation and reducing leak points.

Can plug valves handle abrasive or dirty service?

+

Yes. Plug valves are inherently tolerant of dirty, viscous, and mildly abrasive fluids because the rotating plug action wipes the sealing surface. Lubricated plug valves are particularly robust, the sealant fills surface imperfections and flushes debris from the sealing zone. For highly abrasive service, hardened plug and body materials are available.

Are plug valves piggable?

+

Yes. Full-bore lubricated plug valves provide a smooth, unobstructed bore when fully open, allowing pipeline pigs to pass through for cleaning, inspection, or batching. This makes them a popular choice for pipeline applications alongside slab gate valves and full-bore ball valves.
