Diaphragm Valves

Industrial diaphragm valves for corrosive, abrasive, and hygienic service, weir type and straight-through designs with rubber, PTFE, or elastomer diaphragms in cast iron, carbon steel, stainless steel, or lined body construction.

Overview

Diaphragm valves use a flexible membrane (diaphragm) to isolate the flow stream from the valve mechanism, making them ideal for corrosive chemicals, abrasive slurries, and sterile/hygienic applications where contamination or corrosion of internal parts must be prevented.

AQ Process Systems sources and exports weir-type (for throttling and isolation) and straight-through (for full-bore flow in slurry and viscous service) diaphragm valves. Body materials include cast iron, ductile iron, carbon steel, stainless steel, GRP/FRP, and rubber/PTFE-lined construction.

Diaphragm materials include natural rubber, EPDM, NBR, butyl, PTFE, and other elastomers, selected to match the process fluid chemistry and temperature. All diaphragms are replaceable in-line without removing the valve body from the pipeline.

Frequently Asked Questions

Diaphragm Valves

What is the difference between weir and straight-through diaphragm valves?

+

Weir-type valves have a raised weir (ridge) in the flow path that the diaphragm seals against, providing excellent throttling control and positive shutoff, but restricting the bore. Straight-through valves have a smooth, unobstructed bore, better for thick slurries, viscous fluids, and fibrous media, but with less precise throttling control.

What diaphragm materials are available?

+

Natural rubber (water, air), EPDM (acids, alkalis, hot water), NBR (oils, hydrocarbons), Butyl (acids, gases), PTFE (universal chemical resistance, higher temperature), and FKM (acids, solvents). We recommend the correct diaphragm material based on your process fluid, temperature, and concentration.

How often do diaphragm valves need diaphragm replacement?

+

Diaphragm life depends on the process fluid, temperature, cycling frequency, and diaphragm material. In typical service, rubber diaphragms last 1-3 years and PTFE diaphragms 3-5 years. Replacement is done in-line, the bonnet is removed and the diaphragm swapped without removing the valve body from the pipe.

Do you supply diaphragm valves for pharmaceutical and food applications?

+

Yes. We supply hygienic/sanitary diaphragm valves in SS 316L with electropolished bores, tri-clamp connections, and FDA-compliant diaphragm materials. Valves are designed for clean-in-place (CIP) and sterilise-in-place (SIP) operations. Available from 1/2" to 4".

Can diaphragm valves handle abrasive slurries?

+

Yes. Diaphragm valves are excellent for abrasive slurries because the diaphragm isolates the closure mechanism from the process fluid, there are no internal seats, packing, or cavities to trap solids or wear. The lined body and replaceable diaphragm absorb the abrasive wear. Straight-through designs are preferred for heavy slurries.
