Mechanical steam traps operate on the density difference between steam and condensate, using a float mechanism to open and close the discharge valve. Free float traps use a precision-ground ball that floats on condensate to seal the outlet, requiring no lever mechanism. Lever float traps use a traditional float-and-lever arrangement.

A free float trap uses a precision-ground stainless steel ball that floats freely inside the trap body. When condensate is present, the ball floats and opens the discharge orifice, condensate flows out. When steam arrives, the ball drops and seals the orifice. The ball is the only moving part, no levers, linkages, or springs, making it extremely reliable and long-lasting.
Both provide continuous condensate discharge, but free float traps use a free-floating ball (no lever mechanism), while FT traps use a lever-operated ball float. Free float traps are simpler with fewer parts but typically have smaller capacity. FT traps handle larger condensate loads and always include a separate air vent. Free float traps with air vent add this capability.
Free float traps typically handle up to 5,000-10,000 kg/hr. Lever float and FT traps can handle up to 50,000+ kg/hr in the largest sizes. For very high condensate loads (large heat exchangers, flash vessels, evaporators), multiple traps in parallel or large FT/lever float traps are used.
Yes. Free float traps are available for pressures up to 40 bar. For higher pressures, the precision ball must withstand greater pressure forces, high-pressure models use specially hardened balls and seats. For pressures above 40 bar, inverted bucket or thermodynamic traps are typically more appropriate.
Minimal. The free-floating ball has no linkage to wear or adjust. Maintenance is limited to periodic inspection of the ball and seat for wear or pitting, and replacement of the thermostatic air vent element (if fitted). Clean steam and upstream straining significantly extend service intervals, 5-10+ years is common.
